An Edo-era Old House Standing Upon Castle-like Stone Walls

One of the things that show Sanuki Hiroshima as a source of high-quality stone is the stone wall of the Onoe Residence, which prospered as a shipping agent in the Edo period. This stone wall, up to 4.5 meters high, is made of Aoki stone, a specialty of the island, and was recognized as a component of the 2019 Japan Heritage Site "Setouchi Bisan Isles, Stone Island". Currently, the main house and teahouse have been renovated to accommodate overnight stays and social events, and tours of the building are possible with prior notice to the management. The building, which is full of the techniques of "Shiokaku carpenters," who were active as palace carpenters and house carpenters utilizing their advanced shipbuilding skills, as well as the luxurious furnishings, daily tools, old account ledgers, and other valuable materials, offer a glimpse of how life was like in those days. For contact information and fees, please refer to the Onoe Residence website.
