The “Sky Garden” where the island’s memories bloom again

In spring, as warm sunlight pours down, the ferry draws near the island and a vision appears on the mountain’s crown: a vivid field of flowers. From the harbor, through narrow lanes and up a winding path, the “Sky Garden” unfolds before your eyes.

Long ago, Shishijima was alive with flower cultivation. With nearly 1,000 residents, the island’s slopes became a colorful patchwork, earning it the name “The Island of Flowers.” Inspired by the heartfelt wish of Takako, the island’s last flower farmer—“I want to bring back the days when the island was filled with blossoms”—her family lovingly restored the mountain, creating the breathtaking Sky Garden.

In spring, moss phlox and marigolds blanket the hillside; in early summer, carnations and hydrangeas follow, merging with the endless blue of the Seto Inland Sea. Today, visitors from across Japan and the world come to witness this unforgettable scene. Each flower carries the island’s memories and the devotion of Takako’s family. As you wander among them, let your heart linger on the island’s story. Remember—it is lovingly maintained by volunteers, so please enjoy it with care and respect.
