Shishijima
A sacred camphor tree that has watched over the island for more than 1,200 years
Rising majestically from the heart of the island’s slopes stands Shishijima’s symbol: the Great Camphor Tree. Believed to be over 1,200 years old and designated as a Natural Monument of Kagawa, its overwhelming presence commands awe.
From the port, a 20-minute walk through the village and into the hillside brings you face-to-face with its grandeur. Towering nearly 40 meters tall and 14 meters around, its massive branches stretch powerfully from the base, enfolding visitors in a mystical embrace. Listen to the rustle of its leaves, glimpse the Seto Inland Sea’s deep blue through the gaps in its branches, and you may feel as though you’ve stepped into a scene from a film or a fairytale.
In mid-July, the elegant ubayuri lilies bloom at its feet, amplifying the sacred air. Signposts guide the way, though the path includes steep slopes—comfortable clothing is recommended. Continue further to the Kusunokura Lookout, where the giant tree, the calm inland sea, and a panorama of islands spread out in a breathtaking view.
