Shodoshima
Island Time Spot

A stone quarry frozen in time, bearing the marks of handcrafts from 400 years ago

Shodoshima a source of high quality stone, and in the early Edo period, stones quarried in Shodoshima were used for the stone walls of Osaka Castle. Some of the "ishichoba," or places where the stones were quarried, are open to the public. The huge stones standing quietly in the quiet mountains are truly a sight to behold. How did stonemasons break the stones in an era without electricity or machines? Touching the traces of their handiwork, you may feel the breath of the people of that time. You can enter the stone quarry at any time of the day, but it is recommended to visit during daylight hours because there is no lighting at night.
