The Majestic Stone Walls, Laboriously Built by Human Hands

A 5-6 minute walk from the port of Takamishima. Ura Village, located at the end of a steep slope, is characterized by its stone walls built of many natural stones. It is said that a new village was built here after the village on the north side of the island was destroyed by a large fire, and the houses are built on the stone walls that were cut out of the steep slope. Walking along the narrow alleys where the eaves of the houses jut out, one can remember the hardship of how the people of the past built a place to live in an island environment where flat land is scarce. Nakatsuka Residence stands out among the villages of Ishigaki. The gently arcing stone walls are like castle walls and are a sight to behold.
